Storytelling
My name is Arielle and I love telling stories. I credit this partially to the fact that I grew up without a television in the house. My family used to actually rent a TV on General Conference weekend and for those two days--between sessions--we could watch as many movies as our little brains could handle. Because there wasn't a consistent TV in the house, I read a lot. Every week, my mom and I would visit the local library with The Book Box. The Book Box was a large, cardboard box that could easily fit 40-50 books. I loved perusing the New Arrivals section and some of my old favorites.
My favorite books were journals. I didn't care if they were fiction or non, I could read them over and over. The Amelia Diaries series inspired me to started journaling myself. So for the last fourteen years, I've kept a consistent journal. It's literally the story of my life. My journals grew up with me and there are very few years that went undocumented. Of course the entries have changed over time. I'm no longer writing about Furbies, nor am I trying to tape bits of wood or interesting rocks in my journal. That being said, my journals today still harbor an authentic and sometimes three-dimensional story of my life.

What Arielle learned in 310 TITLE
I'm going to be honest, I thought I was a lot more prepared for this class. Years ago I designed HTML MySpace layouts, so on the first day of class when Brother Judkins said that knowing a little HTML would go a long way, I thought I had it in the bag! Turns out I was miserably wrong. So when attempting to answer the question of 'What Arielle Learned in COMM310,' I have a hard time choosing just one thing. The truth is that practically everything I learned in this class will be forgotten by the end of the year, especially all things PHP, but I think I'll be able to hold onto my brief understanding of HTML. You know, the general basics of creating a webpage full of general, nondecorated HTML. CSS is still a little over my head. I'm at the point where I can have all of my HTML written, but as soon as I open up a clean, new CSS document, I have no idea what to do or how to make things work the way I want them to. Through this class, I've become an even stronger believer in Google. There are a lot of things that can be done in CSS that we didn't go over in class but had to figure out ourselves. This is where Google became my savior. Perhaps that wasn't the purpose of the class, but I genuinely feel that my mind was stretched. Will I be designing webpages anytime soon? For that, I will answer with a resounding NO.

Art
I never planed on going to college. When I was young I learned real fast that I learned differently then most kids my age. I did not have a specific subject that I was good at. Until I found my place in the world and discovered my talents.
School was not as important to me in my teenage life, I had a hard time focusing and would rather just talk to the person next to me. School was hard and I loved attention. Naturally my grades suffered and I was convinced I was stupid and there is no future for me in college.

I Have Learned a New Language
One thing I have always regretted growing up is not learning a different language. HTML has helped me fulfill that whole in my life. I have learned that the Internet does not just read what we type. We have to communicate in a way that will be able to translate what we need our sites to say. I have learned this language. I am not fluent, but with practice I will be able to communicate properly to the Internet.

Music
Music has been in my life since I was young. My mom would play the piano or some CDs and my brothers and I would dance around. When I was eight I started piano lessons and later picked up the guitar when I was 12. Now I collect records, love going to concerts, and always looking for new innovations in music. There is nothing like creating and listening your own music.
I like music because it’s always given me peace and a sense of comfort. It becomes my get away from stresses of the world. Music helps me gather my thoughts and re-direct my focus. I’m glad to have the gift of music in my life.

If Code is Another Language, I'm a Gringa
I know that I still have a lot to learn about HTML, CSS, and PHP I hope I can keep it up after this class because what I’ve learned is very useful. I planned on having my own website because I’m into photography and design and I want to be able to display my work. It’s a tremendous help to understand what code means and what it does. This means that I’m not limited to templates or plugins. I can make sites on my own or I can tweak a template to make it to my liking.

Painting
I love to explore different passions and hobbies, and most recently I have adopted painting. I wouldn't say I'm great at painting or drawing, but I find that my real love of it comes from painting something that is important to another person and then giving it to them.
I have a style all my own, focusing more on solid colors, lines and straight patterns as opposed to the more realistic look. I like to use bold colors, usually electing orange and turquoise, with black accents to my personal pieces. For Christmas this year, I painted the favorite animals of each of my baby cousins for them in their favorite colors. For adults I paint according to their broader interests - I recently completed Doctor Who, Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings paintings, always trying new techniques and styles.

This is how it's done
I hadn't learned anything really about html coding before this class, so in a sense I have learned everything in this class. I understand how the php helps us to save time in the long run, by writing out more complicated code beforehand. I learned how to integrate the content and style codes with the internet. I now understand the difference in positioning and how to use 'the force' when setting up the style for a page. I also have increased in familiarity with the different attributes that can be used.

This American Life
I have a passion for learning and storytelling. I love hearing about rocks, British Literature, computer shortcuts, American history, modern dance, editing, the rule of thirds; anything! This isn't to say that I'm particuarly well-versed in any of these areas, but I do enjoy learning about things I've never considered much before. I think my love of learning and storytelling is what draws me to 'This American Life.' The episodes have different topics that educate, as well as bring out emotions. 'This American Life' is storytelling at its finest!
My favorite episodes of 'This American Life' are the episodes that make me both laugh and cry. Something I really apprecate about the show is that it simply reminds me that we're all human, and that we all have this innate desire within us to connect with others and be understood. There's something powerful in communicating a message and knowing that someone else understands because he or she has experienced something similar, and vice versa.

PHP is hard to-o-o do
PHP is a brave new world to me. I had at least heard of HTML and maybe even CSS, but PHP has been completly foreign to me. I must admit that this class has been terribly challenging to me, but I have also learned so much from it. I have relearned the value in sticking with something challenging. I feel much more competent in HTML, and dare I say it, I'm even feeling more comfortable with CSS.
Something that may improve the class is having a smaller class size. I don't feel like I learned a lot in class, I only seemed to learn when I was working one-on-one with someone: be it Brother Judkins or the tutor. What I've learned about coding has been rewarding, but it has also been extremely difficult. I think eleminating the quizzes for substantial points and doing more in-class project work could really benefit students like me.

Exploring new places
I grew up in a town in Southern California with three little brothers and a big backyard. We had a tall adobe brick wall lining out backyard with trees running all along the perimeter. My brothers and I loved to explore the 'forest' in our backyard and we used to spend hours outside making up our own adventures.
This adventurous mindset has never left me. I love finding new places, trying new foods, and meeting unique people. My hometown is about an hour north of Los Angeles and I take every opportunity I can to spend a day exploring a new niche of the city. From exotic restaurants and quirky shops in downtown LA to a new beach in Santa Monica, everything peaks my interest. Even while living here in Rexburg, I am always on the hunt for places I haven't seen yet. It's an awesome feeling to find a place on campus I never knew existed or discover a restaurant with it's own personality and flavor.

Time = Money
If time = money and php saves time, then php saves money. Php is really hard for me to fully understand, because of all the different properties, brackets, puncuation, and syntax. Having learned more about it, I do know that php can save a lot of time in the long run, even though it takes work to get it started. I learned that instead of having to constantly return to my website's code to change or update content, php can do that for me. All I need to know is how to code php so that it knows what actions to take, when to take them, and under what circumstances. While I enjoy HTML and CSS much more than php, I do understand the value of implementing it into my websites.

Antique weapons
I have always loved a good story . Ever since I was a kid I loved sitting down and listening to older folks talk about their lives and the things they barely survived. I also always had a love for weapons. I was given my first gun when I was 6 years old. So it's no wonder that I have a love of antique weapons. It combines my love of stories, with my love of weaponry. My favorite pieces are those that have a history to them, it can be specific to that weapon, or to the entire build of it.
The picture below featuring the cowboy was taken with one of my rarest pieces. The gun he is holding is a 30 carbine Rugar Blackhawk. It isn't that old of a gun, but it is a history. Rugar produced only a few thousand of the 30 carbine Blackhawks, when they realized they just weren't selling. The cost of a 30 carbine round was to expensive for most people, so they halted production. Most people that bought the gun only bought it for collector value and added pearl grips to it. However the United States then changed some of the weapons they used in the armed forces. All of the sudden there was 30 carbine ammo everywhere, and it was cheap. Rugar immediatly started to produce this weapon again, but they were slightly modified to keep up with the technology. This piece is from the first set of 30 carbines, and is nicknamed the fire breather. It was given this name because it shoots a large flame out of the sides of the cylinder when fired. I've been burned several times because of this. It is also one of the loudest hand guns on record, and can make your ears ring even with ear plugs.

HTML and Time
I learned how to write HTML in this class, to be honest I'm still lost but trying when it comes to the other languages. CSS is starting to come to me, and I'm sure PHP will the more I use it. I felt like we needed more time to learn some principles and less to learn others. I think this course deserves a two hour time block because we get into a topic and then class is over before we can fully understand it.

Reading
During my childhood, my family moved quite frequently because of my Dad's work as a civil engineer and his career change to being a dentist. I was born in Pennsylvania, later, my family moved to Maryland, Washington, Nebraska (Lincoln, Waverly, and the country), and finally to Idaho. In every location, one thing stayed constant, my family's love for reading. Since my eight-member- family didn't have much money at the time, my father would bring us to the library almost every weekend as a free activity. That's how I got hooked on books.
Besides family visits to the library, a middle school program also encouraged my love for reading. The program was called Accelerated Reader . This program had a list of books for which they had assigned points and written quizzes. Once I read a book I could then take the quiz and earn the corresponding reading points. During the year, I could then cash those points in for prizes, like a free book, a board game, book marks, or even gift certificates! So yep, I pretty much loved this program. Since I read soo much, I earned a lot of prizes and sometimes treated my friends with gift certificates that I had earned.

I can make a web site!
I wouldn't say that I'm super confident in my web design skills but I am amazed by the simple html and css skills I have learned. Previously, I didn't know how to set up an html template, although I did know what the tags looked like. I also had only seen css coding once before, so ALL of that was knew to me. I learned that padding and borders add onto elements and that margin is like using the force, it pushes out and gives your item space while not adding onto the element itself.

Filming Short Films
My interest in short films started when a friend of mine started making them. He had a lot of experience and his videos turned out great! Once he left BYU-Idaho, I bought my own camera and started coming up with ideas to make my own videos. I also bought Sony Vegas Studio to do my editing. I make a few videos and posted to Youtube. I kept making videos and now I probably have around 10 videos on Youtube and I make some money on the side from them. I have enjoyed making these. I am currently working on one and I plan to shoot it in the Spring.

Great literature
Though I can’t remember, my mom tells me that I was picking out and reading words as young as two years old. I know that before that my parents or older siblings would also read to me, so books have always been an important part of my life. It isn’t surprising, then, that I chose to study English and continue with my love of literature and language.
Since coming to college, I have been exposed to even more great literature. From poetry and plays to short stories and novels, there is so much out there. One class that I thoroughly enjoyed was based entirely on young adult fiction. Along with learning about this relatively new genre, one assignment was to read at least thirty young adult novels. It was heaven. Where else do you get to read novels for homework? Along with reading these novels, I had to write about them on goodreads.com.

Concept is Key
Before this class, I had a little bit of exposure to html, with very limited css knowledge. Mostly, I just knew that it was a different language that I couldn’t speak very well. It required memorizing odd phrases that defined what I could or could not do to a web page. From this class I have learned that web design is so much more than this, yet it doesn’t have to be complicated. The most important thing is the concept. I have learned that if I can understand the why and how something works, I don’t have to memorize every little piece of the language of web. Focusing on the concept has really helped me develop my web design skills.

Creating
I have loved creating since I was a little girl. My poor mother can attest to that from the time I decided to color 'grass' on our wall at 18 months. As I have grown, I have learned to channel that love for creating into constructive ways, rather than destructive. It started out with my love of crafts and painting and drawing and my sincere interest in being more than proficient in all areas of creating. I get bored easily, though, so it was difficult for me to maintain interest in one project for a long period of time. I still wanted to create and wanted to find a way to integrate that into a career. Currently, I am studying photography and graphic design at BYU-Idaho.
I love it. It is difficult, but it has challenged me to finish what I start even though my instinct wants me to jump to the next project. Photographers who have inspired my work and creative process are: Scott Kelby, Ansel Adams, Caryn Esplin, and Amber Allen

What Have I Learned in COMM310?
I had a fairly easy time learning HTML and CSS. I had a little experience with HTML prior to taking this course, but not much at all. PHP has been the most confusing for me because I hadn't even heard of it before. As I practice with it, though, I am getting the hang of it. I think it will just take some time and experience.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that
There are so many things I enjoy doing, I couldn't possibly narrow the list down to just one. And since the compulsion to conform is merely a vestigial trait at this point in my life, I'm setting my own criteria: you get everything.
I love running. It’s my weight management program--I lost 40 pounds without dieting. It’s my therapy. It’s my meditation. When I started in 2004, I couldn’t run a quarter of a mile. Since then, I’ve run the Teton Dam half-marathon, the Mesa Falls half-marathon, and half a dozen 5Ks. I’m running the Color in Motion 5K in July.

By Small and Simple Things…
A functional and visually appealing website is created by combining small, but important parts into a cohesive whole. You have to pay meticulous attention to tiny details in order for each part to perform properly. Speaking from personal experience, one unclosed or misplaced tag can create havoc.
A single line of code can enhance the look and feel of a website. For example, by adding a box shadow to a container, it becomes dimensional rather that flat and boring.

Design
Being raised in a family of artists solidified my passion towards art and design. My love for interior design comes from my father, who currently arranges exhibitions in the World War II Museum in Kyiv, Ukraine. Growing up, I saw my mother design and sew clothing for our family. She helped me gain a better understanding of how clothing affects our attitude and behavior. After joining the LDS Church in 2002, my mother has felt a strong impression to use her artistic talents for the Church. Thus, in 2008 she first submitted her artwork to the Church International Art Competition, and then the second time – in 2010. Unexpectedly, she won a prize both times, which created a greater passion for my mother to continue implementing her talent for the Church. She now continues to paint; and together we seek to find success in reaching LDS, as well as non-LDS community with her art.
This background helped me significantly in deciding with my major at BYU-Idaho. My love for art and design led me to become an Advertising/Visual Communication soon-to-become expert. I find great joy in creating advertising design and learning to think outside the box. Presently, I have started to apply my professional advertising skills in managing my mother’s art promotion online. Together we decided to create an online shop for her paintings, a Facebook page and a blog that will soon be released into the public. Besides continuing my mother’s art marketing, my goal is to discover ways to apply my passion for art and design at home with my future children and in service for others.

PHP is like Excel
The biggest opening for me personally was that PHP is very similar to Excel. We can incorporate formulas that will make the work much easier for us in the long-run. I have also learned that, as in any foreign language things don't always make sense, in PHP the properties don't always make sense. However, in order to understand PHP, you have to have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS.

Novel Writing
I have loved books for as long as I can remember. I was one of those kids, who walked through both middle and high school with my nose stuck in a book. I actually got quite good at navigating busy hallways without needing to look up.
My love for books transitioned pretty naturally into the wish to create some of my own. I started writing stories in third grade, and it only took me that long because I hadn't realized before that it was possible. For the record, nobody gets to read anything from when I was that young (unless you're my wife or have a good reason), because they were all terrible, but fortunately for me, I didn't know that at the time.

New Languages
This was really an interesting experience for me. Before I took this class, I had heard of HTML and CSS, but had never really done much with them, and I had never encountered PHP at all (probably because it's run entirely server-side and doesn't get a lot of publicity). Now, between this class and the various opportunities I have had in my working life, I am seriously considering writing my own theme for my WordPress installation, and have had the chance to work with a wide range of people and opportunities I would never have encountered before. These really are different languages, if far simpler and more finicky than the ones we use in everyday life, and learning them has opened up a lot of the conversation on the Web as I am trying to create new content and understand new methods.

Car audio
I have been interested in car audio since junior high. It all started when I met my brother in law. In high school, he dated my sister. Sometimes when he would come over he would show us his car stereo system. He often competed in stereo competitions and I thought that was really cool because I was a competitive person myself.
That was my first exposure to high fidelity car stereo. My second experience happened when my dad bought a Corvette, an older one, nonetheless. When he bought it, it needed a little work here and there. One of those things was a stereo. He decided to go all out for one reason or another. I think it's because he loves music and has a knack for high fidelity music like myself; I probably got it from him. Nevertheless, he proceeded to upgrade the stereo system in his Corvette. The system included: 2 10' Kicker Comp VR subwoofers, a 5 channel Rockford Fosgate amplifier, 2 Boston Acoustics tweeters and mids in the front, and 2 Infinity components in the rear. Now you can imagine that this system was loud considering the size of a Corvette; indeed it was loud and fun!.

What I learned in 310
I have previously taken an intro to HTML as well as a PHP class. I struggled a lot to understand the meaning behind what we were doing with the code in those classes. My old teacher would say “OK today we are going to do this, keep up.” He would then write code and we had to follow along. I didn’t understand a lot of the basics even because he expected us to read about them. 310 has changed my outlook on coding and makes me feel like I can actually figure things out and code on my own because I understand the basics of how it works.
During our very first class in 310 we talked about the big white world and how things are organized in boxes. I don’t know about anyone else but I think our discussions and exercises involving the box method were the most helpful to me and my coding abilities. I have learned best practices like: name things meaningfully, and never put style into HTML.

Playing boardgames
So I do have one addiction that I'm afraid isn't getting taken care of anytime soon. I like playing boardgames to pass the time when there is nothing else to do. The best kinds of boardgames are the ones that I can play with my wife, and not end up in the doghouse if the game doesn't end up the way that Jenna wants.
There are all sorts of boardgames. Co-op boardgames where all the players are on the same team playing against the boardgame. Other games pit each player against each other, like Risk or Monopoly. Some games use cards, others use tiles, and some use elaborate boards to keep track of tokens and other playing pieces.

I came into this class knowing HTML, CSS, and PHP, but I've really enjoyed learning about these topics from a Communication Department's perspective. This gives me yet another way to accomplish my tasks.

Disneyland
I have loved everything Disney since I was young. Mickey Mouse has always captivated me I even when I was young and would watch a Disney Classic 'Steamboat Willie. As I grew up loving Disney, I fell in love with the tradition of going to the park as a kid with my family and enjoying in those family moments. Truly priceless memories, a place where young and old can come together and enjoy in family time where you leave a world of today and enter a world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.
My favorite part of Disney has to be Walt himself. He took an idea and made it into something huge. He created a park that could always grow. Where creativity never stopped. His one request was that his park never be complete. He feared if the park had an official completion that imagination and creativity would cease. To this day the spire on the castle remains unpainted, showing the park is not complete and imagination continues as long as employees will aspire to something more. Walt found ways to cultivate those around him and allow others to dream. The Disney Magic continues because we allow our lives to be touched by it.

Patience is a Virtue
Learning HTML and CSS is the most confusing and crazy thing. I think Chris said it best when he said what was most confusing was CSS can be done in so many ways and all of them are right that it's difficult to learn what do to when! As I've learned to speak a different language of sorts, understanding the 'why' of what is being accomplished has been the most difficult for me. Ideally having lessons taught with real life examples would be more benificial to understand how to apply concept.

Watching tv shows
Television has always been my favorite way to unwind at the end of the day. I like to get lost in the shows and forget about reality for the space of half an hour to an hour. I let myself forget about the stress of my day and just let my mind into the lives of the characters. It is a cathartic release after a long day.
My favorite types of shows are generally comedies. They are the easiest ones to just escape into. It is easy to just laugh at the ironies and exaggerated problems of other people. It is mind numbing in the best possible way; no effort even need be exerted on my part, except turning on the TV and the occasional channel surf.

Cars are something that I have been in to for over the last 12 years. It is my drive and my passion. My fascination started when my dad brought home a car magazine when my mother was looking for a new car. I read it and was hooked. Speaking of drive, the love to cars has driven me in all that I done at BYU-Idaho. I was working as an assistant editor at a automotive relate magazine and I have recently accepted a position at a automotive marketing firm in California.

Do not style in HTML!
When I was in High School I was highly involved in SkillsUSA, a national skills organization. During that time, I participated in the Web Design competition and did very well. When I competed it, I used HTML heavily to design the site. I don't even think that CSS was around at the time.
So when I came to class and heard that you do not style with HTML, it kind of rocked my world. It has been great learning the new and proper way to add style to the site. As I have worked to apply the principles of CSS I have learned the power of it. I testify that CSS has brought a new power of style in to my web design.

Hi! My name is Paul Chris Luke, but I go by Chris. I like to help people. Whether it's mowing their lawn, teaching them how to present, or creating a whole event to showcase their talent, I'm all in. I feel indebted to those who have mentored me and helped me grow, and the best way I can see of paying that back is to do the same for others. I strive to live my life by a self-made motto:
'I have, will, and will always use those attributes I have been blessed with to improve the environment I am in, within whatever sphere of influence I have. To become like Christ is to give all we have to benefit others, that is what I strive to do every day.'

I Can Learn When I Don't Want To
I failed through highschool. Somehow, I graduated with a 1.4 GPA. The reason I failed was not because I could not comprehend the material, but because the content was “useless” to me, and I found no interest in it whatsoever. I as I looked into my future, I knew I would not use chemistry, so I didn’t see the need to learn it. I succeeded in basic algebra, writing courses, etc. but most of the time I ran from what I didn’t “love.” After all, if you aren’t doing what you love then don’t do it right?
In college my GPA is a 3.9. I attribute this mostly to the fact that I only take classes I love. If I don’t love the class, I either don’t enroll or drop it. To be frank, I don’t love Comm310. My natural instinct was to run, but I didn’t. For the first time in my life I learned that I could learn and succeed at something even though I didn’t want to. I put my shoulder to the wheel, and through hard work, and no short amount of plea-filled prayer, I can say that I actually understand (and maybe enjoy) Comm310. It goes without saying that all the content is new to me, and that has been learned as well. However, I believe the greatest lesson I learned from this class was knowledge about myself, rather than a subject matter.

Tutorials
I have been watching tutorials ever since I returned home from my mission. I wanted to learn how to use photoshop and found out that it was best to watch tutorials to learn what I wanted.
My favorite types of tutorials are the ones that are step by step and show you something that you would not normally ever need or that you would ever use. I love these because I am able to learn skills and techniques that I can use to produce things that are unique and interesting.I would love to be able to teach and create my own tutorials one day.

CSS is for styling
I used to think that HTML was where you created a website, but I learned that CSS is where it needs to be placed. There are so many different things that HTML can do, but styling a page is not one of them. By using CSS you can create any design that you are imagining.

Photography
My senior year in high school, in order to graduate, we had to complete a senior project. I seriously had no clue what to fill up the required 60+hrs with. I then thought about one thing I recently was interested in, photography. I didn't own a Digital SLR camera so I bought a Nikon D3000 then signed up for a photography class. I learned all about my camera and how to shoot in manual. It was a good start to learning photography, but i was missing one thing: practice!
Luckily I had my willing friends and family members to model for me. I had people start asking me about doing their photos and yes, those were my first paid photography jobs. For a long time I struggled with trying to find my niche in photography. What style I wanted. What my photography business name would be. What my logo would look like. After a couple years of building my portfolio and developing my growing business, I have been very successful and feel very accomplished. I have many dreams for my business and can't wait to see where it takes me. I recently re-branded my business and finally have a website and linked blog up and running!

CSS styles your HTML
I had little experience with CSS before taking this class. I would have to look things up online to figure out certain CSS styles or guess and check. Now I know exactly how to style my HTML how I want it and I'm so excited to use this in the future! Because of this knowledge, I feel more confident when creating blog designs for my clients and I can style the design exactly how I want it to look.
